What is Work Based Learning (WBL)?

Work-based learning (WBL) is a proactive approach to bridging the gap between high school and high-demand, high-skill careers in Tennessee. Students build on classroom-based instruction to develop employability skills that prepare them for success in postsecondary education and future careers. Through experiences like internships, apprenticeships, and paid work experience, juniors and seniors (16 years or older) may earn high school credit for capstone WBL experiences. Students and companies partner to reinforce academic, technical and employability skills through work experience. WBL prepares students for success in college and careers.

Who can participate?

Any junior or senior student who is at least 16 years of age at the time they are enrolled in the course. Reliable transportation is required for each student participating in the Work Based Learning program at LCHS. If the student does not already have a job, they must work with the Work Based Learning Coordinator to find appropriate job placement before the beginning of the Work Based Learning class. Students are encouraged to obtain a job placement relative to their elective focus area to gain hands on experience and on the job training that can offer a smooth transition into their post secondary educational and workforce careers.

What are the course requirements?

Students must complete coursework through a hybrid approach throughout the semester including a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), professional résumé, employment/employee evaluations, and other documents related to the students job placement. School attendance is a priority with Work Based Learning. Students must keep at least a 90% attendance rate at school and students must be passing each class they are enrolled in. Students must obtain and keep a job placement during their Work Based Learning course to reinforce academic, technical and employability skills through hands on work experience.
