Work Ethics Distinction Award / Credentials

The "Work Ethic Distinction" is a workforce readiness credential that can be earned by high school seniors at LCHS. Students who earn the Work Ethic Distinction will be given preference for job interviews at partnering employers if they meet all other qualifications of the job posting.

This distinction was designed to address the community and local industry concern around students understanding the importance of soft skills beyond high school and to encourage students to develop the qualities that meet workforce needs. In 2017, eight of our largest local industries provided feedback on what they wanted to see in new hires and soft skills/work ethics topped the list and is still at the top of their priorities.

When, What & Why?

During the 2017-2018 school year, Lincoln County Schools began the first ever Work Ethic Distinction Award for graduating seniors.

This distinction was designed to address the community and local industry concern around students understanding the importance of soft skills beyond high school and to encourage students to develop the qualities that meet workforce needs.

Eight of our largest local industries provided feedback on what they wanted to see in new hires. Soft skills and work ethics topped the list and are still at the top of their priorities.

Students and their families are invited to attend a special Awards ceremony, Opportunity for Scholarships, and an opportunity to wear the W.E.D. medallion during their graduation ceremony, adding a bit more distinction to the special day.

Student Benefits

  • Recognition expands beyond Lincoln County so a student could get a quality job while attending school or relocate if desired

Employer Benefits

  • Knowledge that the job candidate has initiative

  • Knowledge that the candidate recognizes the importance of not only good attendance but being on time as well

  • Pre-screening done for them

How?

The Work Ethic Distinction consists of 15 standards that show students have the soft and technical skills necessary to be prepared to enter the workforce.

Each standard has a point value assigned to it.

Students earn points for each standard they complete.

Any student earning 25 or more total points receives the Work Ethic Distinction.

In 2022, legislation was passed to make Work Ethic Distinction a statewide graduation distinction.  Earners are now known as “Tri-Star Scholars.”
